Is crushing vicodin as effective as swallowing it whole?

I had a dental appointment today and had surgery done. Now my mouth is extremely numb and I'm supposed to take vicodin now but its really tough to swallow it, so I was thinking approximately crushing it to make it easier, but will it be effective?
