i had asd, but i had a closure with the little metal patch 3 years ago. my surgeon told me i only need to take some medication pills before i go to the dentist/ortho for 6 months. well today, i went to a new dentist, they told me they rather have me take the medication just incase. do you still take your medication, even after 6 months after your closure? and is can my body receive damaged whether i take these pills when its not needed (like how my dentist tells me to take them...but my surgeon said only the first six months)?
Surgically repaired Asd after 6 months comes under the category of negligible risk for bacterial endocarditis after dental or other surgeries. So there is no need for antibiotic prophylaxis for you at present for dental procedures. But it will be very difficult to convince this to your dentist as he has no idea about this and wants to be safe from any litigation. The only way for you to convince him is to take a letter from your cardiologist saying that it is not necessary. If it is difficult, take a print out of the following web sites and try to convince him. If everything fails, change your dentist and don't inform the new dentist about your heart trouble. http://www.fpnotebook.com/CV/ID/SbPrphylxs.htm

If you want other sites just search for bacterial endocarditis prophylaxis for Asd
Though at this stage after closure antibacterial medications may not be essential, it is safer to take them, just in case. Better be safe than sorry.
i am not an Asd patient, but i was born with valve problems(aortic stenosis, aortic regurgitation, bicuspid aortic valve and an enlarged aorta) and i have been taking medication before dentists/ortho appts since i first started going to the dentist when i was little, i am now 17 years old and just this past few years i have stopped taking it(because i was told it wasnt necessary anymore) but i just started up again because my cardiologist wants to keep me on it. So i have been taking these meds every dentist appt, and every ortho for 17years and i have had no side effects, so to answer your impeach no it wont damage you. Its just a precautionary degree and even whether your surgeon doesnt say you need to it wont hurt you to still take them. So keep taking them because it wont hurt you whether you do, and its better then getting sick from a bacteria.
