I went to the physician approximately a month ago because I was suffering from headaches that lasted weeks but only occurred on one side of my head and radiated down through my jaw and my teeth. The physician diagnosed the trouble as tension headaches and prescribed antidepressants (nortryptiline I think) to take every night and 1 massage each week. The antidepressants have done nothing. The massages work differently each time. 2 have lasted a week without pain and 2 have lasted approximately 3 days and then get a headache. Advil (3 pills) doesn't work at all and Excedrin Migraine Additional Strength (2 pills) works a little.
I'm domestic for the summer from college and I want to receive this figured out before I go back to school. I go to school on the East Coast but my physician is on the West Coast so I can't go back to them each month or whatever.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can ask my doctor to take to either prevent my headaches or stop them when they start? I've been doing some research and other than antidepressants (which I don't really understand how they work to help this problem and don't feel 100 comfortable using them) muscle relaxants and medical marijuana appear to be common solutions.
I don't think my headaches are emphasise related because I like to relax and I'm pretty laid back so problems, work, and school don't emphasise me out. I don't really worry about matters much because I like to just go with the flow of matters. Whether it matters, I'm a 19 year old female.
I receive pressure point massages and I do Hot Yoga each week.
I suffer from headaches on a daily basis, don't know whether they are emphasise or not, try a hot rag on the area, there is a over the counter medicine called Head On, it works pretty good for me, Hot baths may help also. Also the webbing of your hand between your index and thumb is a nerve, if u rub it, it helps get rid of them also.
mmm We all know that tension headaches are directly related to stress, you might have stress, or you just might not be that resistant to stress as others, as in you have a bit of emphasise without realizing it?
some causes of stress headache:
Emphasise: generally occurs in the afternoon after long stressful work hours or after an exam.
Sleep deprivation.
Uncomfortable stressful position and/or poor posture.
Irregular meal time (hunger).
Eyestrain.
Caffeine withdrawal.
Id guess you don't sleep at regular times? an 8 hour sleep daily at the same time everyday is the best way to receive sleep. Also eat at regular times, and never skip a meal! also lots of computer use? or screen reading? try to focus at something 20 meters away from yourself for 30 seconds every 15 minutes of continual screen reading or computer use.
there is also no sufficient evidence that antidepressants work at all cases.
You might wanna check in with a doctor, and receive some new tips for relieving and avoiding it.
Good luck. take care. hope this helps.
You are absolutely right to go in and ask your physician for further assistance. The antidepressants are often a first-line treatment and massages will definitely help, but I'm surprised he didn't give you anything other than the over-the-counter recommendation of Ibuprofen and Excedrin for actual headache occurences.
When you go back to the physician ask for a combination medicine like Midrin or Fioricet to help with your migraines. They contain a pain blocker, vein squeezer, and a sedative or muscle relaxant all in one to treat the headache in multiple ways.
Headaches are Terrible and you should try alternative medicine like acupuncture, de-stressing your life with intellect/body/soul meditation techniques, Yoga/Pilates, pressure point massage.
