I told my psychiatrist I alcohol til I pass out every night yet he still wrote an anti depressant prescription. I started taking it but I don't think I can handle not drinking any longer. I'm either going to take the pills and alcohol or drink only. Did he think I would just stop drinking or is that what most people do and I have below average will power?

Some people can and some people can't. You are no different from any one else. Try skipping drinking a day each week, then skip two days, and so on.

You go to a psychiatrist, you're going to receive pills. It's their job. You talk to them for 5 minutes and they want you on something. That's all they know, they're not there to help you cope or give you other alternatives, they are there to right psychological problems through means of synthetic drugs. That's what people go to them for.
You want to cure an alcohol addiction, you go to Aa. I have never been to one (although I have been recommended.. but many people who are not alcoholics even go because it's not just for alcoholism, but it's considered a way of life. Another recommendation would be a psychologist I.E. skills not pills.

mmm maybe whether your depressed, is because you alcohol too much, perhaps if you just quit drinking you wouldnt need the pills either....
i have watched happy people receive hooked on alcohol, and they turn into nasty, depressed, self absorbed people...
dont underestimate the evil power of drink if abused!!

This is such a very sad question. It shows so much ignorance--not of you, but of your doctor.

Antidepressant medication should not be taken with drink, so giving antidepressants to someone who is actively addicted to drink, without addressing the drinking, is, in my opinion, malpractice. The drinking and the depression are Both problems, and trying to treat one without addressing the other is pretty much doomed to fail.

I am not a fan of Aa (have been sober for over 11 years and spent enough time there to form a very negative opinion) and cannot recommend that program to anyone. However, I would recommend that you take a look at this website:

http://www.smartrecovery.org/

which has tools to help you assess your drinking and, whether you so desire, to help you quit. Meanwhile, receive yourself another psychiatrist. The one you have is not serving you well.

just pour everything that contains drink in your house down the drain, and tell the shops you purchase booze from not to serve you. Simple, as shops don't Have to sell you, and if you ask them not to, they won't. then, you simply cant alcohol.
